I've had dreams I lost my teeth or got my teeth knocked out before. Losing teeth is one of the most commonly reported scenarios for dreams of people of all walks of life, although I must say I didn't have this particular dream until I was older. This one, however, was particularly unusual.
I was chewing gum and it wound itself in between and all around my teeth. I could feel it massed like cancer in my mouth, weighing down my jaw and making it difficult to speak. I would stick my fingers in my mouth and get a good grip with my fingernails and pull chunks of what had originally been just a small piece of gum out in wads and throw them on the ground, hard like rubber...nearly the density of tires. I would begin to feel claustrophobic and pull even more out, and then pieces of my teeth would come out with the masses of gum entwined about my remaining, rooted teeth. Pieces and whole teeth, just coming loose from my mouth. I could feel where my cheeks were drawing in and the skin on my face was hanging differently on my bones with their new lack of infrastructure. I could feel the gaping sockets where the whole teeth had come out and feel the air caressing this newly exposed tissue.
When I pulled out the whole teeth, roots and all, they didn't look like teeth upon closer inspection: they looked like strange little art deco sculptures. I examined them and pondered how I knew they were teeth and yet...I pulled out a large chunk of one of my teeth, but not the entire tooth, and looked at it, and it was a tiny piece of intricately carved ivory, with pictograms and curls, scenes of greatness, etchings of gods. I thought to myself how it had been wasting away in my mouth and now here it was, but all anyone around me saw was another one of my teeth coming out, and all were disgusted despite the fact there was no blood.
